Learn To Read Hebrew From Zero and Basic For Beginners - Chapter 0 - The Hebrew Alphabets and the Vowel Signs

The word “Alphabet” comes from the first two words of greek language, namely “Alpha α“ and “Beta β”. In Hebrew language itself, the word that is used is “Alephbeth”, because it derives from the first two words of Hebrew Alfabet, namely “Aleph א” and “Beth ב”. The Hebrew language consists of 22 consonants. Hebrew does not have vowel letters such as in English (A, I U, E ,O), but instead, it has dot or scratch as the sign of its vowel which is called as “Nikkud” in Hebrew. *Note: The letter “Aleph א” here is just as a sample for the consonant. It is not a part of the vowel.

There are two vowel types in Hebrew, short and long. But you do not to worry this thing right now, because it will be explained later in this site.

The two tables above are all of the Hebrew consonants and vowels. However, do not let those things intimidate you in learning Hebrew. The tables above are just examples to show you all the Hebrew consonants and vowels. You do not need to memorize them right now. Because ultimately you will memorize them automatically after you follow the lessons in this book step by step.

Unlike English which is read from left to right, Hebrew language instead is one of the semitic language which is read from right to left. It is very similar with arabic language. This is, of course, really difficult for us to get used with this style. However, we will get used with it eventually.
