The Consonants Lamed ל and Waw ו
ל“Lamed”, this consonant is pronounced with “l” just like in the word “light”. For example:לֵמִי | Lemiy |
לַנִם | Lanim |
ו “Waw” , this consonant is pronounced with “w” like in the word “what”. For example:
וִנָבֵל | Winavel |
בָּוִל | Bawil |
The Vowels Shewa אְ and Segol אֶ
אְ “Shewa”, is actually not a vowel, but it is rather a sign for pause. So is silent. For example:מַלְנַי | Malnay |
נִמְבָא | Nimva |
Take a look at the example, it is clearly that “Shewa” has a function as a sign for pausing a syllable. This is the real function of “Shewa”. However, “Shewa” also has another function, namely as a vowel which is prnounced with “e” in case there is no other vowel which precedes this “Shewa”. For example:
יְבָּנֵן | Yevaben |
יִמְלְנָא | Yimlena |
Take a look at “yebanen יְבָּנֵן” in which the “Shewa” is placed in the beginning of the word. Why does “Shewa” have to be pronounced with “e”? Because there is no other vowel which precedes the “Shewa”. That is why the “Shewa” has to be pronounced with “e”. Take a look also at the second example “yimlena יִמְלְנָא” in which we can see the usage of two “Shewa” which are placed consecutively. The first “Shewa” is not pronounced at all, but the second “shewa” has to be pronounced with “e”. Why? Because “Shewa” basically is not a vowel so that the first “Shewa” pertama which precedes the second “Shewa” is not a vowel at all. Therefore, the second “Shewa” has to be pronounced with “e” becoming “yimlena יִמְלְנָא”. That it the short explanation about “Shewa”. This rule about “Shewa” is actually complicated for the beginners. Therefore, in this blog I do not explain it comprehensively because I do not want to make it hard for you in learning Hebrew. You can understand more later about the rule of “Shewa” after you are able to read Hebrew fluently.
אֶ “Segol”, this vowel is pronounced with “e” like in the word “merely”. The difference of vowel “Tzere אֵ” is the vowel “Tzere אֵ” is pronounced longer so that it sounds like “ey”, while the vowel “Segol אֶ” is pronounced shorter so you will only hear “e”. For example:
'

מֶנֵבָא | Menevah |
מֶלֶם | Melem |
Additional Note:
1. When a syllable is preceded by the vowel “a” and followed by the letter “Yod י”, then it will be pronounced quickly with “ai”. For example, “laylah לַיְלָה (night)” is pronounced to be “laiy-lah”. However, this rule is not applicable in the word “mayim מַיִם (water)” so that it is still pronounced with “ma-yim”.
2. If the sign “Dagesh (dot in the middle of the letter)” is placed in the some letters, then the consonant will be doubled. For example:
'

הִנֵּנִי | Hinneni |
מַמֵּלָה | Mammelah |
Based on the examples above, it is seen that every consonant which is given with “Dagesh”, then the consonant will be doubled. However, not all consonants will undergo this transformation, there is rules for this, but it will be explained later.
