The Consonants Resh ר and Shin ש

ר “Resh”, this consonant is pronounced with “r” just like in the word “red”. For example:

רַמֵן	Ramen
מִלֵר	Miler

ש “Shin”, this consonant is pronounced with two ways, that is:

• If the dot is in the right side, then it will be pronounced with “sh” just like in the word “sheer”. There are some books that prefer use “sy” than “sh” as the pronounciation for this. For example:

שָׁמַן	Shaman
שְׁמָא	Shema

• If the dot is in the left side, then it will be pronounced with “s” like in the word “soup”. For example:

שָׂלַם	Salam
מָשַׂל	Masal

Vowel Kholam Maley וֹ

וֹ “Kholam Maley”, this vowel is a merger of the ltter “waw” and a dot is placed on it. This vowel is pronounced as “o: just like in the word “boss”. The letter “Waw” itself lose its function as a consonant. That is why this “Kholam Maley” is not pronounced with “wo”, but rather with “o”. For example:

שָׁלוֹם	Shalom
שׁוֹמֵר	Shomer
